A single tooth implant is the gold-standard solution for avoiding a root canal, or replacing one missing tooth. It consists of three components: a titanium post that's surgically placed into the jawbone (replacing the root), an abutment that connects the post to the crown, and a custom porcelain crown matched to the shape and shade of your surrounding teeth.
As the implant heals, it fuses to your jawbone - a natural process called osseointegration - and the result is a replacement tooth that's indistinguishable from the originals. It functions exactly like a natural tooth: you can eat, brush, and floss normally, and it doesn't depend on adjacent teeth for support.
A single tooth implant is appropriate for most adults who have lost one tooth - whether through decay, infection, trauma, or extraction - and want a permanent, natural-looking replacement. An implant is also a healthy alternative for people who would like to avoid a root canal.
Ideal candidates have healthy gums, sufficient jawbone to support the implant, and no untreated oral or medical conditions that would slow healing. If bone has shrunk in the area where the tooth is missing, a small bone graft can be helpful to rebuild the foundational structure before implant placement. Smokers and patients with uncontrolled diabetes can still be candidates, but additional planning may be required.
If you're missing a tooth in the front of your mouth, a single implant is often the only option that delivers a fully natural appearance. For molars, implants restore the chewing function that bridges and partial dentures struggle to match.
The biggest advantage of a single implant over a traditional bridge is that it is easier to keep clean, and preserves your other teeth. Bridges require grinding down the healthy teeth on either side of the gap to anchor the bridge - a permanent, irreversible step that often shortens the lifespan of those teeth. An implant stands on its own, leaving adjacent teeth completely untouched.
Implants also prevent the jawbone shrinkage that follows tooth loss. When a tooth is missing, the underlying bone stops being stimulated and begins to dissolve - leading to a sunken facial appearance and shifting of nearby teeth. The implant post stimulates the bone the way a natural root does, preserving your jaw structure and facial proportions.
Long-term, single implants are typically the most economical tooth replacement. The titanium post is biocompatible and commonly lasts a lifetime. The crown lasts 15-25 years on average - significantly longer than a bridge, which usually needs replacement every 10-15 years.
And finally, an implant looks like the tooth it replaces. Our in-house dental lab fabricates each crown to match the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth precisely - so when the work is done, you forget the implant is there.
Your single tooth implant treatment at Tooth Bar typically unfolds across 3 to 6 months in three phases.
Phase 1 - Consultation and planning. You'll meet with Dr. Murray Knebel for a full examination including digital X-rays and 3D CBCT imaging. The CBCT scan shows your jawbone, nerves, and adjacent tooth roots in three dimensions, allowing for precise implant placement planning. You'll receive a clear written treatment plan with a timeline and cost estimate before any work begins.
Phase 2 - Implant placement. The titanium post is surgically placed into your jawbone. The procedure takes 30-60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia, with sedation options available. Most patients describe the recovery as similar to or milder than a tooth extraction - manageable with over-the-counter pain relief for a few days. You'll leave with a temporary crown or healing cap in place.
Phase 3 - Healing and final crown. Over the next 3 to 4 months, the implant fuses to your jawbone. Once osseointegration is complete, we take precise digital impressions, our in-house lab fabricates your final porcelain crown, and we attach it to the implant in a short follow-up visit. This visit is quick and generally does not require anesthetic. The result is a permanent tooth that looks and functions exactly like a natural one.
In carefully selected cases, a same-day or immediate-load implant can compress this timeline - placing a temporary tooth on the implant the same day. We'll let you know if you're a candidate during your consultation.
A single tooth implant treatment includes the implant post, abutment, and porcelain crown. Costs vary based on your specific case, whether bone grafting is needed, and the complexity of the restoration. We provide a clear written estimate during your consultation, before any work begins. Most insurance plans cover a portion, and Beautifi financing is available.
Most Canadian dental insurance plans cover at least a portion of implant treatment, especially the crown component. Coverage rules vary widely between plans. We verify your benefits at the consultation and bill your insurer directly where possible.
The surgical placement of the titanium post takes about 30- 60 minutes. The placement of the final crown a few months later is a much shorter visit, typically 15-30 minutes.
Yes. Once the crown is in place and any post-surgical sensitivity has resolved, the implant looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. You can eat the foods you love, brush and floss normally, and forget the implant is there.
Adjacent teeth begin to shift into the gap, the opposing tooth (the one above or below) can over-erupt, and the underlying jawbone shrinks. Over time, this changes your bite, makes future treatment more complicated, and can affect facial appearance. Replacing the tooth - ideally with an implant - prevents these cascading problems.
Don't let a missing tooth shift your bite, change your face, or hold back your smile. Book a single tooth implant consultation at Tooth Bar in Calgary and we'll show you exactly what's possible.
