WHAT ARE MULTIPLE TOOTH IMPLANTS?

What Are Multiple Tooth Implants?

When you're missing two or more teeth - whether side by side or in different parts of your mouth - multiple tooth implants offer a permanent, natural-looking solution that doesn't require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth.

There are two main approaches. For teeth missing in a row, an implant-supported bridge places implants at each end of the gap and connects them with a bridge of porcelain crowns - replacing 3 or 4 teeth using just 2 implants. For teeth missing in different areas of the mouth, individual implants are placed at each location, each topped with its own crown.

At Tooth Bar in Calgary, we use 3D CBCT imaging and computer-guided planning to determine the optimal number and placement of implants for your specific case - balancing structural strength, aesthetics, and cost.

WHO ARE MULTIPLE TOOTH IMPLANTS FOR?

Who Are Multiple Tooth Implants For?

Multiple tooth implants are appropriate for adults who are missing 2 or more teeth and want a permanent replacement that protects the rest of their smile. Common scenarios include patients who have lost teeth to gum disease in a localized area, patients who have lost adjacent teeth to trauma, patients who are unhappy with an existing partial denture, and patients who have a failing bridge that needs to be replaced with something more durable.

Candidacy depends on overall health, gum health, and jawbone volume. Where bone has been lost, grafting can rebuild the foundation. Your consultation includes a full assessment so we can confirm what's possible and design the right plan for your case.

BENEFITS OVER TRADITIONAL BRIDGES

Benefits Over Traditional Bridges

A traditional dental bridge replaces missing teeth by grinding down the healthy teeth on either side of the gap and using them as anchors. This works in the short term but has long-term drawbacks: the anchor teeth are permanently weakened, decay can develop under the bridge margins, and the underlying bone where the missing teeth used to be still shrinks because there's no root stimulation.

Multiple tooth implants solve all three of those problems. Adjacent teeth are left completely untouched. The implants stimulate the jawbone the way natural roots do, preventing the facial collapse that follows long-term tooth loss. And implant restorations consistently outlast traditional bridges - most bridges need replacement every 10 to 15 years; implant-supported restorations commonly last 25+ years.

Cleaning is easier too. You floss and brush implant-supported teeth normally, while traditional bridges require special threaders and floss to clean underneath.

OUR MULTIPLE TOOTH IMPLANT PROCESS

Our Multiple Tooth Implant Process

Your treatment at Tooth Bar follows the same three-phase structure as a single implant, but with additional planning to coordinate multiple implants and restorations.

Phase 1 - Comprehensive consultation and planning. We use 3D CBCT imaging to map your bone, nerves, and remaining teeth in detail. We then plan the implant positions to balance bone availability, occlusal forces (your bite), and aesthetic outcomes. For implant-supported bridges, we determine whether 2, 3, or more implants will best support the span. You'll receive a complete treatment plan, timeline, and written cost estimate before any work begins.

Phase 2 - Implant placement. All implants are typically placed in a single surgical visit lasting 1 to 2 hours, depending on the number of implants. Local anesthesia ensures your comfort, and sedation options are available. Healing takes 3 to 4 months as the implants integrate with your jawbone. During this time, temporary teeth or bridges keep you smiling and chewing comfortably.

Phase 3 - Final restoration. Once osseointegration is complete, our in-house dental lab fabricates your final crowns or bridge - matched to the shape, shade, and contour of your existing teeth. The restoration is attached to the implants in a short follow-up appointment, and the work is complete.

If bone grafting was needed, an additional 3 to 4 months may be required between grafting and implant placement. We'll outline the full timeline at the consultation so there are no surprises.

MULTIPLE TOOTH IMPLANTS FAQS

Multiple Tooth Implant FAQs

Do I need one implant for every missing tooth?

Not necessarily. For teeth missing in a row, an implant-supported bridge can replace 3 or 4 teeth using just 2 implants. For teeth missing in different areas, each location typically needs its own implant. We design the optimal configuration based on your case.

How long does the full process take?

Most multiple-implant cases take 4 to 6 months from consultation to final restoration. If bone grafting is needed, add 3 to 4 months. Same-day or immediate-load implants can compress this timeline in carefully selected cases.

Are multiple implants more uncomfortable than a single implant?

Surprisingly, no. Most patients report similar recovery whether 1, 2, or 4 implants are placed in a single visit, because the surgical area is treated as one zone. Local anesthesia and sedation options keep you comfortable throughout.

What if I've worn a partial denture for years?

Many patients transition from a partial denture to implants once they realize how much more comfortable, stable, and natural-feeling implants are. Long-term denture use can cause some bone loss; we'll evaluate whether grafting is needed during your consultation.

Will insurance cover multiple implants?

Most Canadian dental plans cover at least a portion of implant treatment. Coverage usually applies to the crown or bridge components. Annual maximums may mean treatment is staged across two calendar years to optimize benefits - we can plan for that. Beautifi financing is available for spreading costs over time.
